NEW | SARAH CHAKSAD QUINTET
Together with Misagh Joolaee (kamancheh), Szymon Mika (guitar), Björn Meyer (bass) and Per Oddvar Johansen (drums), Sarah Chaksad opened this year's Jazzwerkstatt Bern. Sarah has gathered a band around her that shares and lives a love of free musical expression, improvisation and the Persian musical tradition. After the death of her Iranian father a few years ago temporarily severed her ties with Iran, Sarah returned to her roots through music. The color of the Persian folk music instrument Kamancheh, her compositions and 5 wonderful musicians build new bridges.

SJO & Sarah Chaksad
Sarah Chaksad ist zweifellos eine der umtriebigsten Figuren im europäischen Musikschaffen. Sie studierte Saxophon und Komposition in Basel u. a. bei Guillermo Klein. Mit dem Sarah Chaksad Orchestra hat sie zwei hochgelobte Alben veröffentlicht, mit dem international besetzten Septett Songlines ist 2021 ein weiteres hinzugekommen. Ein Jazz- und ein Streichquartett aus Basel und Oslo formen ihre Gruppe Strings, und noch kosmopolitischer ist ihr International Female Musicians Collective. Mit ihren Kompositionen im Spannungsfeld zwischen melodischem Pop und kontrapunktisch verschachtelter Raffinesse im Gepäck leitet sie für einen Abend das SJO.

A new festival is about to erupt in Iceland

The first edition of Freyjufest takes place January 21st 2023 at Harpa in downtown Reykjavik. It features 6 acts that are all making waves on the international jazz scene. From explosive veterans of the Avant Garde scene such as Myra Melford and Angelika Niescier, to the major new talents in Nordic jazz such as Anna Gréta and Ingibjörg Turchi. Throw into the mix a trumpetist/goat horn player from the Norwegian fjords and an arranger from the Swiss Alps this event is not to be missed

Die Musik hatte im Publikum einen Nerv getroffen, eine Saite zum Schwingen gebracht in der auch an diesem Abend sehr gut gefüllten Kammgarnhalle. Offenbar haben selbst Menschen, die eine grosse Neugier und ein leidenschaftliches Interesse an der zeitgenössischen Musik haben, auch einen Seelenanteil in sich, der einfach einmal in der Musik baden will.» more
